Gustaf.

Swedish name. Northgerman "gunnr" = fight and "stafr" = staff, rune. It means: the one who casts spells for the fight, the one who knows how to read the runes.

Different interpretation: "gu" from the gotes, the whole word meaning supporter of the gotes. Title of the swedish kings.

Other species of the same name I do not know personally.

- Gustaf Gründgens, know as "Mephisto" in Goethe's Faust
- Carl XIV. Gustaf, King of Sweden
- Gustaf, a cartoon in Sweden which is known in other countries as Garfield.

(I have been told that "gustaaf" is also a dutch word for "duty free", but I don't quite believe it.)

• gund + stab: Kampfstab (Kampfspeer), Träger des Kampfstabes, Kampfordner, Eckpfeiler des Kampfes. stab, nordisch staf: Stab im Sinne von Stützpfeiler
• göt + stab (nach den altschwedischen Formen Göstaf, Göstaav): göt + Gote. Stütze der Goten (Titel der schwedischen Könige)

Im protestantischen Deutschland ist Gustav als Verehrungsname für Gustav Adolf heimisch geworden.
